Vinted sent your details to HMRC? Here's what it means
Why Vinted reported you
Since 1 January 2024, online marketplaces like Vinted, eBay and Depop have had to share information about their sellers with HMRC. A seller is reported for a year if they make 30 or more sales, or receive more than €2,000 (about £1,700). Going over either one is enough.
These limits count every sale, including old clothes from your own wardrobe. That's why lots of people who have never run a business get the email.
When it happens
The report covers a calendar year (January to December). Platforms send it to HMRC by 31 January the following year, and they must send you a copy of what they reported by the same date. That's why these emails tend to arrive in January.
Do I owe tax?
- Selling your own things (clothes you've worn, gifts you didn't want): usually no tax, however many you sell. Capital Gains Tax only comes into it for a single item, or a set, sold for £6,000 or more.
- Buying to resell (charity shop finds, car boot hauls, items bought to flip): that's trading. The first £1,000 a tax year of sales is covered by the trading allowance. Above that, you need to register for Self Assessment.

What to do now
- Don't panic. The report is information, not a bill or a fine.
- Work out which of your sales were reselling. Separate items you bought to resell from your own belongings.
- Add up your reselling sales by tax year (6 April to 5 April). This is the tricky part: Vinted reports by calendar year, but HMRC taxes by tax year, so the numbers won't match.
- If your reselling sales were over £1,000 in a tax year, register for Self Assessment by 5 October after that tax year ends. See our Self Assessment guide.
- If you got a letter from HMRC (sometimes called a "nudge letter"), don't ignore it. Reply by the date it gives, even if you have nothing to declare.
Keep records from now on
Keep a note of what you paid for items you resell, plus costs like postage you paid yourself, packaging and bumps. If you ever need to show HMRC your figures, records make it quick.
