Self Assessment for resellers, step by step

The short version. If your reselling sales go over £1,000 in a tax year, register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends, then file online and pay by 31 January.

Step 1: Check you need to

Add up your reselling sales (not your own unwanted things) for the tax year, 6 April to 5 April. If the total is £1,000 or less, you don't need to register for this. See Do I pay tax on Vinted?

Step 2: Register as self-employed

Register on GOV.UK as a sole trader. HMRC then sends your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) by post, so don't leave it until the last minute. GOV.UK: register for Self Assessment.

Step 3: Gather your figures

The hard part is that Vinted shows sales by date, not by tax year. ResellSorted adds them up by tax year for you and shows which option leaves you with less to pay tax on.

Step 4: File your return online

Sign in to your HMRC online account and fill in the self-employment section with your turnover and either your costs or the trading allowance. Your profit is added to your other income and taxed at your usual rate (Scotland has its own rates).

Step 5: Pay

Pay by 31 January. If you're employed and owe less than £3,000, HMRC can usually collect it through your tax code instead, as long as you file online by 30 December.

Keep your records

Keep your sales figures, what you paid for stock, and receipts for costs. HMRC can ask to see them, so keep them for at least 5 years after the 31 January deadline for that tax year.
