Do I have to pay tax on my Vinted sales?
Selling your own things: usually no tax
Clearing out your wardrobe isn't a business. If you're selling clothes and things you bought for yourself, there's usually no Income Tax to pay, even if you sell a lot of them. This is true even if Vinted reports you to HMRC.
The one exception is Capital Gains Tax, which can apply if you sell a single item (or a set of items that go together) for £6,000 or more at a profit. That's rare on Vinted.
Buying to resell: that's trading
HMRC is likely to see you as trading if, for example, you:
- buy items specifically to sell them on for more (charity shops, car boots, clearance sales)
- sell regularly, with the aim of making a profit
- make things to sell
Lots of people do both: some reselling plus some of their own old clothes. Only the reselling counts as trading income.
The £1,000 trading allowance
Each tax year (6 April to 5 April), the first £1,000 of trading income is tax-free. This is your total sales, not your profit. If you sell £900 of resold items in a tax year, you don't need to tell HMRC.
Above £1,000 you must register for Self Assessment and then choose either:
- the £1,000 allowance: take £1,000 off your sales and pay tax on the rest, or
- your actual costs: take off what you really spent (what you paid for the items, postage you paid, packaging, bumps).
Pick whichever leaves you with less taxable profit. If your costs are more than £1,000, actual costs usually win.
How much tax would I pay?
Your taxable profit is added to your other income (like your wages) and taxed at your usual rate. Scotland has its own Income Tax rates. On small profits the bill is often less than people fear, but it still needs to be declared.
What about the £3,000 limit I've heard about?
The government has announced a plan to raise the point where you need to register for Self Assessment from £1,000 to £3,000. Check GOV.UK for when it starts. Until it does, the £1,000 rule applies.
